Associate Director Consumer Insight

The organisation

This organisation is focused on understanding, measuring, and predicting consumer financial behaviour. The team comprises business analysts, statisticians, and quantitative scientists dedicated to addressing the company's most challenging analytic problems.

The department is a new office location in Amsterdam, dedicated to advanced analytics, that supports their core operating geographies (the UK, DACH, and Nordic regions). Now, with a team of almost ten, they aim to grow the team to 25 professionals by the end of 2020. Amsterdam team members will report to leaders within one of the companies home countries, focus on the same activities as local analysts, and be fully integrated members of the Decision Science team.

As part of a thriving, pan-European analytic community, this role is an exciting opportunity to join a team that partners broadly within the organisation and influences the company's operational, analytic, and financial strategies.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 6-12 statisticians, modellers, statisticians, and team leaders to develop high quality, robust predictive models and analytic tools to support our regional teams in the DACH and Nordic regions across all Decision Science Disciplines
  • Define modelling strategy and oversee the development of analytic plans and pipelines (including selection of methodologies, tools, techniques, and metrics); drive innovation by incorporating new modelling capabilities and novel data sources
  • Build a deep understanding of the organisations core business model and identify the best opportunities to drive significant value through data science methods and analytic intervention
  • Build and develop a high performance team, create a strong talent pipeline to support growth, provide direct coaching and mentor-ship, and guide teammates to reach further and achieve more
  • Guide testing strategies focused on understanding (a) the behavioural drivers of repayment behaviour and (b) the most effective stimuli to promote consumer engagement
  • Translate unstructured business problems into well-defined and tractable data science projects
  • Develop presentations and memorandum to communicate key messages and findings to senior leaders and colleagues
  • Work closely with partners and stakeholder groups (including operations, other staff functions, and adjacent teams within Decision Science) to provide direct support and accomplish shared goals

Required experience and technical abilities

  • Postgraduate degree (PhD preferred) in a quantitative discipline with significant (>40%) coursework/training in statistics, econometric, or an allied field
  • Practitioner/manager background likely to include 6+ years of direct experience building predictive models, and 4+ years of direct experience managing teams
  • Demonstrated expertise in analytics, statistics, and/or machine learning, likely evidenced through conference presentations, academic publications, and/or contributions to open source statistical software
  • Experience building advanced statistical models from complex, specialised or large data pools using techniques like logistic regression, generalised linear models, categorical data analysis, and/or one or more machine learning methods (e.g., neural network, k-means clustering)
  • Experience with one or more structured programming languages for statistical and/or numeric computing (e.g., Python, R, or Scala); exposure to modern data science environments (e.g., cloud, Jupyter, git) and data visualisation tools would be very helpful
  • Experience with hypothesis testing and experimental design, P&L-focused business analysis, and building high-value analytic tools and products
  • Demonstrated ability to migrate statistical models and analytic results into production environments and oversee all aspects of the analytic project life-cycle (i.e., data exploration, hypothesis testing, code development, testing/validation, and model deployment and performance monitoring)
  • Ability to oversee the technical work of analysts and managers, providing coaching and technical development where needed
